Colossians 1:16,17 “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”

I used to believe that mathematics was the ultimate language of the universe.  Mathematics could describe all truth, explain the universe and show us even deeper mysteries.  I thought that all the great physical laws of the universe could be expressed in elegant and simple formulations that reveal how ‘everything’ works.  This is what I was taught.  How wrong I was to believe this.  Now I know better. There is more to the universe than what is seen and directly measured.  There is more to the universe than what can be conjured up by our minds.  Whether we like it or not, believe it or not, live it or not – we all exist in a world held together by a profound Spiritual reality.  His name is Jesus. And Jesus is greater than gravity!

The universe isn’t ‘just’ the physical.  There is a mental component to it that  quantum physics alludes to; “The universe shows evidence of the operations of mind on three levels. The first level is the level of elementary physical processes in quantum mechanics. Matter in quantum mechanics is … constantly making choices between alternative possibilities according to probabilistic laws. … The second level at which we detect the operations of mind is the level of direct human experience. … [I]t is reasonable to believe in the existence of a third level of mind, a mental component of the universe. If we believe in this mental component and call it God, then we can say that we are small pieces of God’s mental apparatus. . . ” (Freeman Dyson)   There are many gods arising out of  this mentality.

Today, people often make a grand and carnal religion out of their ideas about the  mental component of the universe.  From the Garden of Eden to today our carnal desire is to be like God (Genesis 3:5).  What hubris – to ‘become’ God by internalizing Him and His entire creation reducing the universe to an image in our heads.  The search for truth becomes internalized.  We look inward to know Him rather than to Him and His Word.  New Age religion claims; “…a portion of truth… is found in every religious and philosophical system…. There is no room for absolute truth…. But there are relative truths . . . . When we can contact our own inner God, all truth will be revealed to us.” (From Truth to a New Spirituality by Berit Kjos)

We must speak of this ‘mental’ component of the universe because it is as real as our minds are.  Deceptions may be false but their deadly effects on us are all to real.  To not speak of it, to deny it, to silence talk about it is to put our heads in the sand.  There is a mental component to the universe.  There are many, many gods that arise out of this mental component of the universe. You must learn to recognize them for what they are – false and carnal.  These gods are all dead ends and they are killing the souls of many!  God has spoken about the prophets of the ‘New Age’ through Scripture many times; “The prophets prophesy lies in My name. I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, divination, a worthless thing, and the deceit of their heart.” (Jeremiah 14:14)

His Word also warns of the unfortunate ones who fall under the spell of the lies; “The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12)

There is a final and ultimate reality in which the universe exists; “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:1-4)  This reality is external to our minds because it existed before us.

This reality is external to our minds because it is separate from us.  He has a name and it isn’t my name or your name.  This reality is Jesus; “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).  Jesus is a historical fact.  We will all meet this reality in Person it’s only a matter of time:  “so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10,11)  This reality is greater than our minds.

This reality is greater than our minds because it has the power to transform our minds into His image;  “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17), “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,. . . ” (Romans 12:2)  God is not in you, rather He is working in you; “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13) Basic physics teaches us that nothing can work on itself.  There is no god in you changing you for the better.  When you change for the better this is the work of God’s Holy Spirit.  Inner change is not brought about by ‘navel gazing’ or searching for the ‘God in you’.  Don’t waste your time – it’s running out.

This reality is spiritual, universal and ultimate.  This reality is greater than gravity because it influences and transforms what gravity cannot touch.  Jesus tells us; “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24)  The universe will pass away, this world will pass away but the spiritual reality upholding this reality will never pass away.  Jesus said; “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” (Matthew 24:35)

Jesus has the last word!  His Spirit lives and moves among us and works in us; “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” (John 6:63) His Word has the final authority and power in all of our lives; “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high . . . ” (Hebrews 1:1-3)

Never forget that reality, our universe,  is upheld by Jesus whether you believe in Him or not.  As gravity which is also invisible, holds the physical universe together –  His Word holds everything together against chaos.  Paul was so right when he said that even though people might not believe in God or see Him, – we all search for Him.   And even though He is invisible, He is very close ; “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.” (Acts 17:26-28)

     Praise the Lord!
