People will often say; ‘the truth will set you free’.  I’m not sure  if  they know are quoting Jesus.  Actually, Jesus said a little more than that; “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

TruthWillSetYouFreeHowever, if the truth brings freedom, why wouldn’t everybody want the truth?  Doesn’t everybody want to be free?  Yes and no.  Everyone thinks they want to be free but not everybody wants others to be free.  Often people prefer the comfort of their prison to the uncertainty of leaving it.  Yet others may not know they are in prison.  And every jailer will tell his prisoners that it is best for them to remain well-behaved behind bars.  Some will sing and dance; “I’m free, I’m free!” – all the while bound up with heavy chains of deception, fear, obligation and guilt.  The truth will only set you free if you hear it, believe it and follow it to freedom!

The Bible tells us that the familiarity of captivity has its own comforts that people will long for; “Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”  (Exodus 16:3)  Prison life is dependable, routine and you get fed every day!  You don’t have to take any responsibility for your life.   Many like it that way and there is no shortage of willing jailers in this world.  Freedom comes with a cost.

Not everyone is willing to pay the cost of freedom.  And here we come to the often ‘not quoted part’ of Jesus’ statement; “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.”  Freedom comes with following Jesus, by holding to His teachings and being His disciple.  This costs!  Jesus, Himself cautioned us to consider the cost; ” And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.  For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—  lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, . . . ” (Luke 14:27-29)  If you want to know the truth, if you want to be set free, then you will have to pay the cost of following Jesus.  What is that price on freedom?  The cost is the cross!  If you want to live with Jesus in His freedom, you have to die with Him.

There are many fake ‘easy ways’ to freedom.  Living wild for the lawless, who confuse freedom with wantonness and who worship the pleasures of selfishness.  Or, idolatry, for the religious and bowing down to the many who would be little gods who tell you they are prophets.  Such idolatry provides freedom from maturing and taking responsibility for your own life!

The Bible tells us the hard way to freedom; “. . . when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.  You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”  (Ephesians  4:21-24)

The truth is the truth wont set you free!   The devil knows the truth – he isn’t free.  The devil’s demons know the truth – they aren’t free.  Many false prophtets know the truth, yet they teach the doctrine of demons and they aren’t free.  Many idolaters know the truth and dance and sing; ‘I’m free’ – but they aren’t free.  The Bible tells us; “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder.”  (James 2:19)

The truth is that if you follow Jesus, hold to his teachings and pick up your cross then you will know the truth.  And He will set you free!

Jesus said; “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

That’s the whole truth and nothing but the truth!
