Freedom in His Word

2 Cor 3:17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

Do you long to be free?  This longing is different for each one of us;  to be free of addiction, to be free of compulsions, to be free of anxieties, to be free of drudgery, to be free …!  We often think that freedom can be achieved by escaping or evading when in reality freedom is in overcoming.  It is not the condition or situation that enslaves rather it is the power that it has over us to bind our spirit.

What has the power to break the hold any chain has over us?  Jesus said;  “It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit, they are life.”  (John 6:63)  God’s Word can free you but you must do three things before this can happen.  Read it, believe it and choose it!  If you don’t read it – it can’t touch you.  If you read it but don’t believe it any freedom you may claim will only be, at best, ‘skin deep’.  You must choose to live God’s Word.  Satan fervently believes every word in the Bible but he will NOT choose it.  Living God’s Word can only be achieved with faith.

When we suffer under the cruel bondage of our chains it is hard to walk in faith.  I struggle with walking in fear.  Worry over what may happen torments me.  The only way I can be free is to consciously choose to walk in faith.  I have to rebuke my chains and choose God’s Word over them. Fear of man, condemnation by others (and by myself) are other chains that rattle along with my walk.  Freedom is found only in His Word; “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” (Romans 8:1)

Whatever our situation, whatever chains may bind us, our slavery is only an illusion albeit a powerful one at times.  The reality – the true reality is in His Word;  ” … in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.   For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:37-38)

To Become a Fool

1 Cor 3: 18,19,20 “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.  For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written: ‘He taketh the wise in their own craftiness’  and again, ‘The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.’ “

God’s Wisdom is crazy!  Statements like:  “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it.”  (Matt 16:25) just don’t make sense to many people.  Business people look for the bottom line, thinkers look for reasoning and practical people look at results.   The world looks but doesn’t see;  For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness, … ” (1 Cor 1:22,23)

If mankind’s wisdom is so great and powerful then why is the world in such a mess.  Every reason in the world pounded into the ground to encircle our wayward proclivities cannot stop us from racing towards destruction.  Worldly wisdom though agreeable has no power over our wanton appetites.

What has the power to reach us, to call us, to draw us?  What does the world despise and push people away from?  Paul nails it when he proclaims:  “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one who believeth, …” (Romans1:16)  The Gospel of Christ is the only power that can transform the world – one person at a time – like a nuclear chain reaction!

The path to salvation isn’t reasonable as the world reasons.  The path to salvation can’t be found by thinking, studying  and looking – it is revealed.  The world is an enemy of this revelation because it is incompatible with it.  Peter squared off against the powers of the world in his day saying;  “… be it known unto you all and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified and whom God raised from the dead, even by Him doth this man stand here before you whole.  This is `the stone which was set at nought by you builders and which has become the head of the corner.’ Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.”  (Acts 4:10,11,12)

Only a fool (in the world’s eyes) would believe this!

Primacy of God’s Love

Romans 8:38, 39  “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
God’s love is right there beside us.  Always,  everywhere and available.  You cannot go beyond God’s reach!  No wall is too thick for God to break through.  Nothing in your past can disqualify you from God’s love.  No one can disqualify you from God’s love or judge you unworthy.  The primacy and availability of God’s love is another spiritual law that works often unnoticed in our world.  Some may condemn and judge yet John 3:16 is quite clear; “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

We have two laws working side by side – the proximity of evil twisting our thoughts and intentions and the primacy of God’s love – in our lives.  It has been this way since the dawn of time.  God told  Cain, who was  jealous of his brother Abel that;  “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”  (Genesis 6:6,7)  Sin does crouch at our doors and we must get control over it.

Adam and Eve’s disobedience opened their eyes to the knowledge of good and evil. And as their eyes opened to this knowledge so did their capacity for good and evil develop.   Since the fall,  the story of mankind’s appetite for evil over good is told by history as it unfolded. And so for each one of us, sin crouches at our door. How can we master it?

How? By choosing! By exercising our free will to do good when we would rather not!  God laid down this choice to Cain, and later on to the people of Israel;  “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live, that thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey His voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto Him; for He is thy life and the length of thy days, that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”  (Deut 30:19,20)

One of Satan’s big lies to us today is that there is no choice, but there is always a choice.  There is always a way out.  Scripture tells us plainly that when we are tempted, we will always have a way out; “There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it. ” (1 Cor 10:13)

Our hearts may be desperately wicked (Jer 17:9,10) but God gave us free will to choose Him over evil and He rewards our choice;  “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the LORD, search the heart; I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.”

Even in our darkest time, in our time of greatest weakness and temptation, He is right beside us with love and grace available.  Even though we are inclined to the worst we are FREE to choose LIFE.
